Are you preparing to move? As a real estate brokerage firm, we spend a lot of time working with people who are preparing for this major life change. With all of the time it takes to pack, prep your new home and make the move, it's easy to make a few mistakes along the way, and some of them can have costly consequences. Here are some common mistakes we have seen, and important moving tips for how to avoid them.
Make Your Move Easier by Avoiding These 5 Common Mistakes
- Not Scheduling Movers Early Enough - Did you know that late spring and late summer is when over half of all moves take place? If you're moving during this "rush hour," and you don't schedule your movers early enough, you may be left with a less than desirable option. One of the most important moving tips is to give yourself at least three to four months to schedule your movers.
- Leaving Things Behind to Move Later - Unless your move is temporary, take everything with you. If you can't justify the cost or don't have the space, get rid of the item, rather than paying to store it. Chances are once you get settled in your new space; you will replace those items, or find that you don't really need them. The money spent to store them will prove to be a waste.
- Expecting Things to Happen Quickly - Unless you're moving across town and are handling the entire move on your own, you need to give yourself some time between when you send your belongings to your home and when you absolutely have to have them. You may want to plan a few nights in a hotel when you arrive at your new destination while you wait for your moving truck to arrive. Send your items well ahead of any deadline, like the start of work or school, when you must have them.
- Failing to Read All Paperwork - When your moving company hands you a contract to sign, check it thoroughly. Recheck your inventory sheet to ensure everything is in the truck and on the way to the destination. You have a lot going on during a move, but failing to read the paperwork could leave you with unexpected costs or missing items.
- Packing Everything - Packing your home is an excellent time to sort through items you don't need. Why pack it and then unpack it again if you don't need it? When packing, get rid of anything you haven't used in the last 12 months. This can even lower your moving costs if you're paying by the pound.
