Cold-Season Wildlife Areas Locals Visit in Greene County, OH | Wright-Patt Realty

Winter Bird Watching and Wildlife Viewing

While the seasons may change, Greene County remains a great place to spend time outdoors. With the leaves down and the landscape often blanketed in a snowy layer of white, winter is often the easiest time to spot wild creatures in these nearby nature preserves and wildlife areas.

Beaver Creek Wildlife Area - Xenia, OH

Less than 10 minutes from many Xenia homes for sale, the Beaver Creek Wildlife Area is a beautiful, richly diverse 373-acre landscapeRanging from swamp, marsh, and fen ecosystems to wet prairie, forest, and upland prairie, the area is a haven for wildlife. Excellent bird watching is also available along the 0.75-mile trail and boardwalk.

Caesar Creek Wildlife Area - Spring Valley Township, OH

The 3,100-acre Caesar Creek Wildlife Area is made up of sunny meadows, secluded forests, and wooded ravines around the shoreline of Caesar Creek Lake. It's a perfect destination for bird watching.

  • Gulls, terns, herons, and a variety of shorebirds are commonly seen near the water
  • The surrounding wetlands and meadows support songbirds ranging from meadowlarks to sparrows.

Like many state wildlife areas in Ohio, hunting is permitted in Caesar Creek Wildlife Area. Visitors should use caution and wear high-visibility colors during hunting seasons. 

The Narrows Reserve - Xenia, OH

Extending along the Little Miami River between Xenia and Beavercreek, The Narrows Reserve is a beautiful place to be immersed in nature. The reserve's 6-mile trail system is beautiful in any season, especially the 2.3-mile River Loop, which offers gorgeous views of the water. A primitive campground is provided, and kayak and canoe launching is available when the river is ice-free. 

Russ Nature Reserve - Beavercreek, OH

With a newly built bird-watching station, Russ Nature Reserve is a prime destination for bird-watching in Greene County. Winter birders are likely to spot hardy year-round residents like cardinals, chickadees, and woodpeckers, and raptor sightings are also common. Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve - Yellow Springs, OH

Keep an eye out for woodland birds like cardinals, titmice, and nuthatches, but use caution on icy trails.

Spring Valley Wildlife Area - Waynesville, OH

Address: 1863 Roxanna New Burlington Road, Waynesville, OH 45068

Spring Valley Wildlife Area encompasses 842 acres on the east side of the Little Miami River, including a large area of marshy wetlands. A variety of waterfowl nest here and pass through during the migratory season, and some individuals stay all winter. Look for Canada geese, wood ducks, mallards, coots, black ducks, and blue-winged teals.
