Enhancing Your Home: A Guide to Adding Water Features | Wright-Patt Realty

Nothing says peace and tranquility like being near water. Including water in your home's landscaping can attract birds and other local wildlife, help block out noise pollution, and give you a place to relax. Whether you have a large or small backyard, here are some options for adding water features to Beavercreek homes for sale.

  • Fountain. A fountain can be made to fit any space. A small one can sit in the corner of your garden, or a large one can be the centerpiece of your yard. You can put one in a pond or have it stand on its own. It can even function as a birdbath. A fountain generally requires at least two tiers—a smaller one on top where the water flows from and a larger one on the bottom to catch and recirculate it. Installing them takes a bit of planning, so ideally, you should hire a water engineer. To function properly, it needs both a pump and a filter, both of which will require a nearby power source. To avoid spillage, the bottom tier should also be at least twice as wide as the water jet is tall. When done properly, a fountain is a beautiful addition to any garden.

  • Rill. A rill is a shallow stream of water that runs through an area. They can occur naturally, but in your garden, they're usually paved with stone or brick or lined with flowers and other plants. It's a bit like a small river or creek but more structured, with the ability to direct it wherever you want, including around curves and corners. They're especially great for adding the sound of running water to your yard, which helps block traffic and other ambient sounds.

  • Pond. There are a variety of different types of ponds you can add to your landscaping. A raised pond, typically made of brick or stone, creates a focal point in your yard, drawing the eye. A regular, below-ground pond takes a bit more effort to install, but it's great for the environment, helping to remove carbon dioxide from the air, reducing heat in the summer, and promoting biodiversity. Finally, a koi pond provides a variety of colorful fish, which, with regular food and care, are a great addition to your yard's aesthetic.

  • Pool Features. Instead of adding a new water source, you could just renovate your existing pool to make it feel like a vacation getaway. Adding a waterfall can help keep the water circulating in style. Likewise, diving rocks will add natural beauty to your pool area, giving it the look of a hidden grotto. Or even just adding a hot tub or jacuzzi can improve both your aesthetics and your comfort as you relax in the backyard.

  • Maintenance. While water features bring all sorts of benefits, be advised that they also require extra maintenance, much like having a pool. Standing water grows algae and attracts mosquitoes, so keep any water in constant motion. Ideally, you should have a pump to circulate and keep the water fresh. If not, be sure to replace the water periodically as it evaporates. When installing your water features, ask what kind of maintenance you'll need and how to do it, or be prepared to hire someone to do it for you.
