The key to a successful garden comes down to the prep work. Here's how you can jumpstart your garden this spring.

For those of us who have a passion for gardening, it can sometimes be a struggle. The weather may not always cooperate with our efforts in our area, and you must dedicate considerable time to tending to your garden. But you can still start preparing for your garden months before summer hits. Many of the things you will need are right in your own home. If you are looking for a new home, our REALTORS® can help you find the perfect place with just enough space for your gardening endeavors.

  • Start Your Seeds Indoors – Use small containers (yogurt cups or biodegradable egg cartons work great!) filled with potting soil and plant your seeds. Label each container so you know what is in each one. Seedlings can be hard to identify when they first start to sprout.

  • Water Only As Needed – Seedlings require a moist environment to germinate and thrive. Keeping the soil moist to the touch is important. Check the soil every day or so and water your seedlings as needed. Make sure you don't overwater your seedlings.

  • Use Compact Greenhouses – You can also buy little greenhouse kits. This is probably the best option if you plan on starting many seeds. Starting multiple seedlings ensures you will have plenty to start your garden. If you have more than you need, give the rest away to friends and family.
  • Prep Your Garden Plot First – While you have your seedlings started inside, you can begin to prepare your garden plot outside. Measure it out and plow the soil several times to break it up and add air to the dirt. Rake it smooth each time.

  • Lay Out Your Garden Before Planting – Many Beavercreek homes for sale have plenty of room for a medium to large garden. Plan the layout of your garden and divide your plot accordingly. Put markers in place so you can easily identify each area. You can adjust each area when you prepare to plant your seedlings.
  • Spread Out Fertilizer And Turn Soil Weekly – Spread a little fertilizer and continue to turn the soil once a week. This will ensure the fertilizer is worked deep into the soil long before you plant your seedlings. Turning the soil regularly will ensure that the soil is soft enough for the seedlings to take root and thrive.

  • Transplant Seedlings – When the weather warms up and the threat of frost has passed, you can start transplanting your seedlings outside and into your garden plot. Once transplanted, you must closely monitor your seedlings to ensure they start to take root.

Gardening is a passion for many. When it comes time to move to a new home, you want to make sure the one you choose has a space large enough for you to have the garden of your dreams. Contact Wright-Patt Realty today to learn more about finding houses with enough property to sustain a garden. We can help you find the perfect home!
