
December usually offers many opportunities for the family or for singles and friends to get out and about town. How about an after-lunch visit to get some delicious holiday cookies? Cake, Hope and Love is the place to go. Actually, there are so many choices, you'll have a tough time deciding on what to order, so study the menu before you go. And while you're at it, think about that custom cake you'll need for the holidays. There are different sizes and an array of flavors, including plain-old-but-scrumptious vanilla and chocolate, to Cinnamon Maple, Funfetti, Banana Cream, Orange Dream, and much more. Or have a look at the cake combos, such as Grasshopper, with chocolate chip cake and mint buttercream filling. You get the picture.
- Winter Walks at Wartinger Park. Wartinger Park, 3080 Kemp Road, Beavercreek. Dec. 14-18
What could be more enjoyable than taking a Winter Walks at Wartinger Park with your loved ones while viewing the city's holiday decorations and lights on our local historical cabins? Each cabin is decorated by a different community organization, and you can vote for your favorite cabin using your phone and the QR code on the signs at the park. Decorations are courtesy of Beavercreek Historical Society.
- Clifton Mill. 75 Water St., Clifton
Load up the kids for a visit to one of our region's foremost historical sites, the Clifton Mill — all decked out for the holidays. There's also a covered bridge, a '40s-era gas station, and a casual American eatery. Cost is $10 per person for everyone age 4 and older. The mill has been widely celebrated for more than 30 years for its 4 million holiday lights display, illuminating the mill, the gorge and riverbanks, the trees, and bridges. A special feature is a 100-foot "waterfall" of twinkling red lights. It's a fantastic winter wonderland that includes a Miniature Village, a Santa Claus Museum, a Toy Collection, and a synchronized lights and music show. Gates open at 5 p.m., and lights come on at 6 p.m. Gates close at 9 p.m.

Parklights at Caesar Ford Park. Through Dec. 31. 520 South Stringtown Road, Xenia
And here are more lights to brighten up your holidays at the Parklights at Caesar Ford Park. Drive through the Winter Wonderland and North Pole Car Show, then it's on to the Winter Farm and Festive Festival. Finish up with the kids waving at Santa at the North Pole. After you drive through once, you can do it again. This is bound to become a holiday tradition with your family, so be sure and carve out some time for it.

Kettering Ice Arena. 2900 Glengarry Dr, Dayton
If you're new to the area, you might want to pick up ice skating, and December is the perfect month to do so. Whether you're a novice or you have skills, you're sure to be able to get some great exercise on the ice, dancing off some of those holiday calories, at the Kettering Ice Arena. Located in the Kettering Recreation Complex, the arena hosts youth and adults who participate in figure skating, ice skating lessons, ice hockey, and leisure skating. The Kettering Ice Arena also has rental skates and lockers.
