Interior design can be tricky without the right guidance. Here are some tips for exploring your own style.

As you search for your new home among Beavercreek homes for saleno doubt you imagine the possibilities with each house you tour. While touring, most of us wish we had a tad more interior design skills under our belt; it would sure help when trying to picture design changes that could make the home speak more to our own design style.

But just what is your interior design style? Fortunately, there are ways to discover it without getting a degree or hiring a professional to guide you. Our REALTORS® have some great tips for helping home shoppers discover their inner interior designer.

  1. Take a look at your clothing, your furniture, and home furnishings. You'll likely discover you know more about your design style than you realized.
Look in your closet. You'll probably find a pattern: say, lots of black and white. Come to think of it, you realize your taste in home decor follows suit: monochromatic schemes that lend themselves to ultramodern, sleek designs. Or maybe you're given more to soft, comforting textures that evoke a vintage look. Whatever your tastes, studying and reflecting on your clothing and the furnishings you've owned in the past can help you develop a good sense of your interior design style.

  2. Do some old-school research in magazines.
Yes, Pinterest is great for giving tons of visuals, but it can also overwhelm you. You might be better off starting your research by leafing through magazines. No worries finding material; there are many publications out there that can show you the possibilities. Something about seeing the pretty pictures of homes in print format will help you focus. Tear out the pages that speak to you, cut out the pictures and put them on the wall or the floor, and start designing your dream home. You can scribble over them or change colors or add cut-outs to develop your designs.

  3. Take advantage of virtual and real-time tours.
Visit homes online for a preview of what they look like inside, then go visit the ones that really grab you so you can study them up close. Make notes: what is it about a home that you find pleasing? By all means, analyze the location, number, and size of windows, types of materials used for counters, flooring, and cabinets, lighting, and layout of the home. If your time for touring is limited, have a look at sites such as Houzz.com's Browse Ideas by Room feature and study the myriad examples of room interiors.

  4. Keep your eyes open for design ideas around you.
Visit local museums, art galleries, botanical gardens, restaurants, or hotels for design ideas. You can also get ideas from movies or when you travel. Seeing new things can unlock design ideas in your mind that will translate to your own design projects.

  5. Define an end goal.
Whether you're already in a home you want to redesign, or you're set on renovating a home you intend to buy, it's important to focus on a goal. For instance, do you want a brighter kitchen? Do you want your living room to feel more inviting? Do you want a family room to seem more spacious? Defining a goal can keep you from being overwhelmed. Tackling one project at a time and bringing it to completion can help you build your confidence in your newfound design skills. You'll proceed to the next project with an even stronger sense of your abilities.
