Moving Day Countdown - Wright-Patt Realty

Help reduce the stress of moving by planning each step. Whether you are a first-time homeowner or buying one of the larger Beavercreek homes for sale to accommodate your expanding family, moving is a large task. With your move-in day marked on your calendar, start taking steps to make the process easier for you and your family.

Start Your 30 Day Count Down

When you get a notice from our REALTORS® on your exact move-in day, begin the organization process of your current living space. At this point, you must make the decision if you're going to do the move yourself, rent a moving truck, or hire movers. Regardless of your choice, you need to begin to prepare for your move.

First Week: Pack Non-Essential Items

  • Purchase Supplies: The most common moving items include durable boxes, markers, labels, packing tape, bubble wrap, trash bags, and cleaning supplies.

  • Keep, Donate, Recycle, or Discard: Preparing to move is an excellent time to get rid of items that you don't use or want. Begin cleaning out closets, attic, garage, basement, or other storage spaces. Simply start placing your belongings into categories. Begin packing your belongings that you want to keep, donate any unwanted usable items, and recycle old magazines or other things, and discard the rest.

  • Sell: If you're looking to make extra cash, set up a yard sale, or sell your unwanted items online.

  • Declutter: After cleaning out storage spaces, start decluttering the rest of your home. Pack away non-essential items. For example, remove wall decorations, pack unused kitchen appliances, dishes, utensils, seasonal items, and anything else you're not currently using.

  • Important Documents: Either shred old documents to discard or place the papers in a box to view at a later time.

Second Week: Contact Utilities and Keep Packing

  • Transfer or Cancel: Contact your utilities, auto-delivery services, internet, electricity, and other providers to transfer or cancel services. If you are going to transfer your utilities, provide the service with your new address, and move-in date. Keep an ongoing list of companies that you contacted.

  • Update Your Address: Contact the postal service, bank, credit card providers, insurance companies, and local services to provide your change-of-address date.

  • Continue Packing: Start going to each room of your current home to pack unused items. Pack as many items as possible early to avoid stress.

Third Week: Keep Going

  • Contact Schools: If you are moving out of your current school district, contact the school's office to request a records transfer.

  • Pack and Clean: Continue to pack and start cleaning each room as you go. Cleaning and packing each room is vital to reach your move-in date goal.

  • Contact Your Realtor: Email or call your realtor to ensure your move-in date is still on track. If you need to be out of your current home on a specific date, a delay may require you to rent a storage unit.

Fourth Week: Move Time

  • Supervise: If you hired movers, supervise the process to ensure all boxes, furniture, and large items are correctly loaded.

  • Start Loading: If you're moving everything yourself, ask friends and family members to help. Start packing the rental truck or other vehicles as soon as possible.

  • Final Inspection: Go through your current home to inspect each room for any items left behind.

Moving into a new home is a stressful, yet exciting, time. Planning the move is essential. If you need resources to help with your move or help to find a new home, contact Wright-Patt Realty.
