Homeownership Prep Snow StormSnow storms are simply a fact of life in an Ohio winter, and it's important to be ready for them!  Even if you aren't in one of the major snow zones around Ohio, it's always a good idea to be ready in advance for whatever the season might throw at you. The sooner you get prepared, the easier it'll be to adapt if a big storm seems to roll up out of nowhere.

Let's look at some of the best ways to "winterize" your home for a storm:

  1. Get a Winter Storm Kit Ready
All sorts of things can go into an effective winter storm kit. That said, there are some items you definitely shouldn't overlook. Those include plenty of water, calorie-dense foods, a first aid kit, flashlight, a battery-operated radio, and plenty of batteries. You should keep a good shovel and a windshield scraper both in your car and within the home.

  2. Clear Out Your Pipes
Cold weather brings an extreme risk of burst pipes, floods, and other plumbing problems. This is especially the case if the weather turns cold suddenly. Pipes can freeze and rupture with only a small amount of water in them. To stay safe, disconnect exterior hoses, turn off pipes that lead to them, and drain the pipes fully. Cover the hose bibs with secure Styrofoam covers.

  3. Clean Out Gutters
Your gutters are a crucial part of your home's overall structural integrity. When gutters are full, the resulting strain can damage the roof and even spread as far as the foundation. Cleaning gutters before a winter storm is vital, because water can pool in your gutter and roof. This sets the stage for dangerous ice dams that affect basements and foundations.

  4. Prepare for a Long Wait
Ideally, you should have supplies for about two weeks prior to any storm. While it's virtually unheard of to be "snowed in" for this length of time, it's always better to have more supplies than not enough. In addition to food and water, you should be sure to have hygiene essentials. Don't forget plenty of fuel as well as batteries, candles, salt, and sand.

  5. Weatherize with DIY Projects
A strong, secure, and well-insulated outer envelope will protect your home and keep you comfy. If you only have time for one quick fix, consider weather stripping the front door. The furnace will be working overtime in the midst of most storms, so have it checked out by a professional. Repair cracked, broken, or warped windows. Make sure garage doors are closed before snowfall.

  6. Be Careful During the Storm
The best thing to do during any serious snowfall is to stay indoors. If you do have to go outside, be sure to be fully bundled up with appropriate gloves, boots, and headwear. Take things slow, as it's easy to fall on snow and ice. Change out of wet clothes as soon as possible and be alert to signs of frostbite – like numbness or a blue or white cast to the extremities.
