Tips for Moving with Children

There is no easy way to tell your children that they will be moving to a new home, away from their friends, family, and favorite places. For many parents, that conversation is one of the most difficult moments in the moving process. The good news is that there's a ton you can do to make them more comfortable with the move, and get them excited about their new home in the process. Our REALTORS® in Beavercreek have helped many families find new homes, and we've put together our best moving tips for telling your children when it's time to move.
How to Break the News and Build Excitement
One of the first things to know about moving with children is that your kids will often reflect your own attitude about moving. If you show an upbeat, positive attitude about the move while talking to your children, then they are more likely to have positive feelings about it, too. How you prepare for that conversation also plays a major role in the outcome.
- Start Early – While you don't need to bring them along for every open house, it's a good idea to start talking to your children about the move once your search gets serious. Moving is a lot to process for a child, and they need time to work through it. You don't have to tell them right away that you will be leaving town, but you can start the process of getting them excited about their new home so that they will be more receptive when the time is right.
- Take Field Trips – If you want your kids to be excited about their new home town, give them a reason! Taking trips to kid-friendly places in your new neighborhood is a great way to show your kids that they will have plenty of fun in their new home. When it's time to break the news that you'll be moving to that neighborhood, your kids will have something to look forward to after the move.
- Be Specific – Kids are curious, and yours are likely to have quite a few questions about their new home, and their new school. One of the best moving tips is simply to do some research ahead of time so that you'll have the answers to their questions, and be as accurate as possible about the big dates on your moving calendar.
- Staying in Touch – Leaving friends behind is one of the hardest things about moving at any age, and it's certain to be on the minds of your children. Fortunately, with social media, video chat, and communication apps, your kids will have plenty of ways to stay in touch with friends. Show them how the technology works, and do some test runs to get them excited about staying in touch.
- Packing Partners – For many children (parents too!), packing up is the time when a move really begins to feel real. Allowing your children to pack some of their own possessions will give them the peace of mind that their favorite items will be there when they arrive at their new home. It's also a good idea to let them keep a few of their favorite toys unpacked until moving day arrives.
