5 Fun Ways to Get to Know Your Neighbors

After buying a house and moving into a new neighborhood, one of the best ways to feel settled in is to make friends with your new neighbors. Our real estate agents at Wright-Patt Realty know this isn't always easy to do so we've created this list of five tips to help you get you started.
- Say Hi!
People are busy. It's easy to go months without seeing your neighbors in this day and age of garage door openers and indoor activities. So, if you want to meet the neighbors, you may have to make the first step. Simply go to them and say "hi." Knock on the door, try to catch them while they are outside doing yard work or arrange it so you are getting the mail at the same time. Don't wait for your neighbor to be the one to make the first connection. When buying a house, if you're serious about meeting the neighbors, you need to be the initiator.
- Throw a Party
Throw a housewarming party and invite the neighbors. Don't make this an elaborate scene, but simply have some drinks and snacks and let people come over to see what you've done to the place. Be sure to invite people in person because this will encourage them to say "yes."
- Have a Yard Sale
Nothing brings out the neighbors quite like a yard sale. If you've found that you have a number of pieces or items that don't fit into your new home, throw a yard sale and take the time to get to know the neighbors who attend. This gives you a great excuse to get to know your neighbors.
- Take the Kids Out to Play
If you have children, take them outside to play in the front yard. This will give your entire family a chance to catch neighbors out walking dogs or kids in strollers. Consider setting up play dates with those who have kids the same ages as yours, as this is a great way to get to know other people in the same stage of life.
- Volunteer in a Local Organization
Does your neighborhood have a community association or a local charity? Volunteering can get you out of the house and involved with your community. Don't forget to attend civic meetings, like Board of Education and City Council meetings, which are another great way to get to know the people in your new community.
When buying a house, it's easy to get caught up with all of the stress and busyness of packing and moving, but once you're settled, it's time to get to know the neighbors. If you need help with buying a house, contact Wright-Patt Realty for assistance.
